I Did the Searching for You: What Theatre Artists Should Be Watching Rn

Hi my loves and happy Thursday!


I know you are getting bombarded with recommendations for what to watch right now so perhaps your watch list is full. However, I have gathered a more theatre kid oriented list of things for you to watch. I have scoured every streaming platform I have looking for things I believe will either educate us as artists/ human beings or simply bring us joy. While I have not watched everything on this list most of these come highly recommended from others so check them out!

Netflix


TV Shows:

  • Tiny House Nation Traveling the US, host John W and expert Zack G are helping families prep for the tiny lifestyle and create hyper-customized mini homes. (2 Volumes)

  • Tidying Up with Marie Kondo Marie helps a retired couple reclaim their space by showing them how to cut back on clothing, store Christmas decor and display old family photographs. (1 season)

  • Cheer This gripping docuseries follows the up and downs of Navarro College's competitive cheer squad as they work to win a coveted national title. (1 Season)

  • Next in Fashion Talented designers from around the world compete for $250,000 and the chance to become the next big thing in fashion. (1 season)

  • Queer Eye Grab some tissues! An all-new "Fab Five" serve up hip tips, emotionally charges makeovers and heartfelt reveals that bring out all the feels. (4 Seasons)

  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Imprisoned by a cult leader as a teenager, Midwesterner Kimmy is freed after 15 years. The first thing she decides to do is move to New York. (4 seasons)

  • Opening Night Once a rising star on Broadway, Nick is now the perennially pestered production manager for a new musical dedicated to rock music's one-hit wonders. (1 hour 24 minutes)

Documentaries/Specials:

  • Miss Americana Taylor Swift In this revealing documentary, Taylor Swift embraces her roles as a songwriter and performer-and as a woman harnessing the full power of her voice. (1 hour 25 minutes)

  • Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened The Fyre Festival was billed as a luxury music experience on a posh private island, but it failed spectacularly in the hands of a cocky entrepreneur. (1 hour 37 minutes)

  • Oh, Hello on Broadway Two delusional geriatrics reveal curious pasts, share a love of tuna and welcome a surprise guest in the filming of the popular Broadway comedy show.

  • Hannah Gadsby Nanette (Heavily recommended by others) Australian comic Hannah Gadsby reshapes standard stand-up by pairing punchlines with personal revelations on gender, sexuality and childhood turmoil. (1 hour 9 minutes)

TV Shows:

  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel In 1958, Midge Maisel's life is on track- husband, kids, and elegant Yom Kippur dinners in their Upper West Side apartment, But when her life takes a surprise turn, she has to quickly decide what else's she good at- and going from housewife to stand-up comic is a wild choice to everyone but her. (3 seasons)

  • Lady Bird A warm, affecting comedy about a high school senior who must navigate a loving but turbulent relationship with her strong-willed mother over the course of her eventful and poignant senior year of high school. (1 hour 34 minutes)

Documentaries/Specials:

  • Chasing Happiness From humble roots as pastor's sons in NJ, through their meteoric rise to fame, the Jonas Brothers' bond was unshakeable-until a surprising and painful breakup lead the brothers down very different paths. (1 hour 37 minutes)

  • Made for More This is more than a documentary. It's a film packed with tools to help you discover the best version of yourself. Mama of four, CCO/founder of The Hollis Company and The Chic Site, Rachel Hollis has been called "Tina Fey meets Tony Robbins for women" and is taking audiences on an inside look at chasing the biggest dreams. (2 hours)

TV Shows:

  • Making It From executive producers and host Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman comes a uniquely lighthearted competition series reuniting two of pop culture's biggest BFFs and celebrating the creativity and craftiness in all of us. (8 episodes)

  • Mrs. America Mrs. America tells the story of the movement to ratify the ERA and the unexpected backlash led by a conservative woman named Phyllis Schlafly. The series explores how the culture wars of the 70s helped give rise to the Moral Majority and forever shifted the political landscape. (3 episodes & counting)

  • Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Zoey, an introverted computer programmer living in SF, begins to hear innermost desires of the people around her through song. (9 episodes and counting)

  • Little Fires Everywhere Artist Mia Warren and her daughter arrive in Shaker Heights, OH. (8 episodes and counting)

  • Fosse Verdon Influential choreographer Bob Fosse and acclaimed Broadway dancer Gwen Verdon begin a decades-long personal and professional partnership that changes the face of American Entertainment, but they a pay a price in their pursuit of greatness. (8 episodes)

  • American Pickers Follows Mike and Frank as they travel the country searching for American treasures. (9 seasons)

Movies:

  • Isn't it Romantic Natalie is a NY architect who works hard to get noticed at her job, but is more likely to deliver coffee and bagels than design the city's next skyscraper. Things go from bad to weird when she get knocked unconscious and she discovers she 's playing the leading lady in a real life rom-com. (1 hour 28 minutes)

Documentaries/Specials:

  • Fyre Fraud (I haven't watched this one yet but I heard it's better than the Netflix one) Fyre Festival was the defining scam of the millennial generation, at the nexus of social media influence, late-stage capitalism, and morality in the post-truth era. Marketing for the event went viral, but turned epic fail after stranding thousands in the Bahamas. (1 hour 35 minutes).


Disney +


TV Shows:

  • Encore! EP Kristen Bell reunites former HS classmates from around the US to re-stage the musicals of their youth, years after they originally performed them. (12 episodes)

  • HSMTMTS East High is putting on it's first-ever production of HSM with a new era of HS students and their drama teacher. (10 Episodes)

  • The Imagineering Story Go on a behind the scenes journey of Walt Disney Imagineering. (6 episodes)

Movies:

  • Onward Elf brothers Ian and Barley get to spend a day with their late dad go on a quest in their dad's epic van Guinevere. (1 hour 42 minutes)

  • Mary Poppins Returns Now an adult with three children, bank teller Michael Banks learns that his house will be repossessed in five days unless he can pay back a loan. Just as all seems lost, Michael and his sister receive the surprise of a lifetime when Mary Poppins -- the beloved nanny from their childhood -- arrives to save the day and take the Banks family on a magical, fun-filled adventure. (2 hours 10 minutes)
